CTA Trains Resume Normal Service In Loop After Gas Leak

CHICAGO (CBS) -- CTA train service on the elevated tracks downtown was returning to normal early Thursday afternoon, after a gas leak forced the CTA to halt trains on the Wabash leg of the Loop.

The Fire Department said construction workers hit a gas main Thursday morning at Madison and Wabash around 11:15 a.m. All CTA service on the Wabash elevated tracks was shut down due to the risk sparks could ignite gas.

Trains on the Brown, Green, Pink, and Orange lines were rerouted to use the Wells and Van Buren legs while crews fixed the gas leak. Orange and Brown Line trains temporarily operated as a single route between Kimball and Midway.

The Fire Department said the leak was repaired by around noon. The CTA said trains were resuming normal service by 12:15 p.m., although there were residual delays on all four lines while trains went back to their usual routes.
