CTA Gives Blue Line Station An Address That Seems Impossible

(CBS) – Is it a sign of the times—or much ado about nothing?

The CTA just unveiled a multimillion-dollar makeover of a Blue Line station. The problem is, the transit agency made sort of a mistake.

Hundreds of people use the Damen stop every day. If they stopped to look at the address, they'd notice one big issue on its grand reopening day.  It's different than it was before.

It's new and clean, and local businesses are proclaiming their love of the revamped Blue Line station at 1588 North Damen. But is that the wrong address?

By all appearances, yes, it is. First, old Google Earth photos show the station to be at 1558 North Damen. And second, the stop is sandwiched in between 1552 and 1560 North Damen, so the 1588 address is perplexing and, in Chicago, impossible.

The CTA offers this response: "We realize that this does not coincide with the sequential order of the adjacent buildings and are currently looking into this and hope to have more information soon."

That may be helpful. Because, right now, plug the new address into MapQuest, and you don't get anything.

A CTA spokesperson also says the current 1588 address reflects decades of official county and CTA records.  But it clearly hasn't been used for a very long time.
