Child Among 5 Injured In Rogers Park Crash

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A two-year-old child was among 5 people injured in a traffic crash Monday in Rogers Park, according to the Chicago police and fire.

Officials responded to a rollover accident involving two vehicles in the 7200 block of North Ridge Avenue around 10:47 a.m.

Officers attempted to stop a driver for failing to stop at the stop sign, striking a vehicle and causing it to flip over. The offender drove away from the officers and crashed one to two blocks away, according to Chicago police.

The two-year-old injured child was in the car that flipped and was transported to Lurie Children's Hospital. The child's condition is not known.

Two other people in that vehicle, both adults, were injured and taken to Northwestern Hospital. Their condition is also not known, police said.

"I heard a loud boom," witness and dental office manager Penny Chipp said. "I knew it was an accident immediately."

She alerted her husband, a dentist, while he was with a patient.

"I'm actually working with a patient and I dropped everything," Dr. Gregory Chipp said.

He went over to the intersection and saw the crash site. He helped the passengers get out of the car.

"I just yanked the baby out," Chipps said.

The driver and passenger of the fleeing vehicle were treated for injuries and released.

Officers are speaking to one person of interest. Area North Detectives are investigating.
