Woman dead in crash on Borman Expressway in Northwest Indiana

Deadly crash on I-80/94 in Gary, Indiana

The Borman Expressway (I-80/94) in Northwest Indiana was jammed early Wednesday morning on account of two crashes involving semi-trailer trucks, one of which left a woman dead.

Indiana State Police a semi-trailer truck and a car were involved in a crash early Wednesday on the westbound Borman near Richard Gordon Hatcher Boulevard (formerly Grant Street) in Gary. A semi-trailer truck overturned in the crash.

A woman was killed in the crash. The Lake County, Indiana Coroner's office identified her as Dahlia Shakespeare-Sharpe, 53, of Roseville, Michigan.

Shakespeare-Sharpe was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m., Indiana officials said. She was driving the car involved in the crash, state police said.

State police said the truck that overturned was carrying 40,000 pounds of frozen food. The truck driver was not injured.

For some time after the crash, the Borman was jammed solid near the scene. The three left lanes of the expressway were all blocked.

All lanes reopened by 7:15 a.m., but traffic remained congested for some time.

The Indiana Toll Road and Chicago Skyway (I-90) were advised as an alternative. Ridge Road to the south was also an option, though not for trucks.

On I-80/94 at Cline Avenue, a couple of jackknifed semis were involved in a multi-vehicle crash, and the right lane was blocked. More lanes may be blocked to pull apart the wreckage.

On the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago, a car and a box truck were involved in a crash in the northbound lanes at 87th Street at 2:58 a.m., according to Illinois State Police. The victims suffered minor injuries, and all lanes were open by the mid-morning hours.
