CPS Turns Off Water At Tanner Elementary School, Citing Concerns About High Lead Levels
(CBS) -- Chicago Public Schools officials said they've turned off drinking water fountains at Tanner Elementary School, citing concerns about lead levels in the water there.
The announcement came Friday as CPS announced plans to test lead levels at 250 schools built before 1986.
Tanner Elementary, 7350 South Evans, is a pre-K to 8th-grade school with nearly 400 students. CPS CEO Forrest Claypool says officials think Tanner is an "isolated incident" because 31 other schools that were tested were found to have safe lead levels.
The high lead levels were found from some, but not all, of the school's water fountains.
Drinking water will be provided at Tanner, school officials said.
All Chicago public schools will eventually be tested, officials said.
