CPS Recommends Merger Of Ogden, Jenner Schools

(CBS) -- Chicago Public Schools will officially recommend Ogden and Jenner elementary schools merge.

CPS sent a letter to families Monday.

Ogden International School is in the affluent Gold Coast neighborhood. Jenner Elementary Academy is nestled in the area formerly home to the Cabrini Green housing projects, about a mile and a half away.

CPS officials have yet to draft a transition plan, but parents believe it will include splitting grades between the schools.

Some parents are concerned it could mean they have kids at different schools.

"That would mean I, as a parent, would have to drop [off at] two different locations in the morning, just for elementary. That's what I'm concerned about, how is the school going to provide for that?" Ogden parent Yaira Oliveras said.

Ogden parent Steve Ack said he loves that the plan would create a more diverse school.

"I love it. That's one of the reasons why we live here," he said. "Living in a city, for my son, is a blank slate; and there are no preset things of what he should be, or how he should live, and he gets it all here. I love that."

The change would go into effect in September 2018.
