CPS Adds 2 Safe Passage Routes At Dyett, Al Raby
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago public school students start classes in two days. And while businesses are helping students look their best, the Mayor's Office is adding some extra security to keep kids safe.
CBS2's Sandra Torres reports the Chicago Public Schools announced the addition of two new safe passage routes--which means more personnel watching over children in the streets.
"I feel pretty good about that," said Sharnell Gates, who has three boys going back to school. "Police patrolling too, so that's a great thing.
The additional routes at at Walter Henri Dyett High School of the Arts, 555 E. 51st St., and Al Raby High School, 3545 W. Fulton Blvd,
Lawrence Riley believes in the safe passage idea, but rather take matters into his own hands when it comes to his son, Calvin. "I take him there, I pick him up... we're always watching our surroundings."
"There's only so much they can do so me as a parent, I do everything I can...anything can happen at any time," Riley added.
The additional safe passage routes also mean 142 schools now participate in the program, with the support of 1300 safe passage personnel across the city.
