CPD Vehicle Drives Off Kennedy Expressway Overpass At Foster Avenue

CHICAGO (CBS)-- A Chicago Police Department squad car crashed through a guard rail and went off the Kennedy Expressway overpass at Foster Avenue early Tuesday morning.

The female officer from the 16th District had been following a suspect in some car burglaries, and was trying to turn right onto the Kennedy Expressway at Foster Avenue around 4:35 a.m., when she missed her turn, crashing through a guard rail, and going down a grassy embankment onto the side of the Kennedy Expressway.

"I don't know what happened, but I got into a traffic crash. I don't know where I'm at," she told dispatchers. "I got on the expressway side. I don't know what happened to me. I don't know."

The officer's squad car knocked over a light pole as it crashed through the fence, knocking power lines onto the expressway.

She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, but her condition was not available.

The outbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway were shut down at Foster Avenue for several hours, both for the crash investigation and to make repairs to the fence and clear the power lines.

Around 9:30 a.m., all lanes of the expressway were reopened.
