Chicago Police officer shot and wounded on city's West Side; suspect shot and killed

Chicago Police officer hurt, suspect killed in West Side shootout

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago Police officer was shot in the wrist during a traffic stop Thursday evening on the city's West Side.

Police Supt. Larry Snelling said around 6 p.m., officers pulled over a vehicle in the 3800 block of West Ferdinand Street, off Avers Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

One man was in the car, and there was an exchange of gunfire between him and the officers, Snelling said.

Witness video posted online does not make clear visually what is happening – but it can all be heard. Over a dozen gunshots are fired, and a person behind the camera asks to call 911.

One of the officers was shot in the left wrist and was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County with non-life-threatening injuries, Snelling said. He was in good condition late Thursday.

CBS 2's cameras were rolling as the officer was wheeled from an ambulance into the hospital – appearing in good spirits as he gestured to his fellow officers with a thumbs-up.

The shooter was shot by the officers, Snelling said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as 26-year-old Dexter Reed.

The four other officers involved were also taken to the hospital for observation, Snelling said.

The officers involved range in time on the job from two to five years. The officer who was shot is a five-year veteran, Snelling said.

At the scene of the shooting, dozens of officers were seen combing the area for evidence. The crime scene spread out across several city blocks.

A group of violence interrupters made their rounds – providing outreach and asking neighbors to come forward with information.

"We do this in like different areas - trying to show people that there is a better way of doing things without violence," said Frederick, of Breakthrough Urban Ministries.

CBS 2 looked into Reed's background, and found out he played basketball at Morton College in Cicero in 2018 and 2019. A family friend said he was stunned by the news – because Reed was supposed to have gone on to play in the pros.

"I couldn't believe it because, he don't do nothing. He don't bother mess with nobody. He don't bother nobody," said family friend Tavaris Warren. "It was like, where did it come from, you know?"

The Chicago Police Investigative Response Team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating.
