CPD Officer Saves Unconscious 3-Year-Old With CPR

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer, just 16 months with the department, is credited Thursday with helping save the life of a 3-year-old boy in Chicago's West Side.

Chicago Probationary Police Officer Tone Trujillo and his partner Police Officer Jose Sanchez were about to respond to a call about a coyote, when they heard the call on Thursday at approximately 7:16 a.m., about a 3-year-old boy who was not breathing at the 5500 Block of West Gladys.

"As I entered the apartment I noticed a little boy laying on the floor, surrounded by his mom and grandmother," Trujillo said. "Immediately I checked for pulse and noticed there was no breathing. The boy was completely, completely cold and dilated eyes."

Upon arrival, Officer Trujillo took the 3-year old and began CPR.

"Immediately I resorted to my training and fatherly experience," Trujillo said. "And began CPR."

Officer Trujillo said the boy took a small breath and regained a pulse.

"I'm not going to deny it," Trujillo said. "A little tear came to my eye."

The Chicago Fire Department arrived shortly after and took over, resuscitating the child, police said. Their quick response helped to save the child's life.

The boy was taken to West Suburban hospital. He is reported to be doing fine and running around the ER like a normal 3-year old, police said.

Trujillo is 39-years old and a married father of two.
