Couple Injured, 3 Pets Killed In Northwest Suburban Fire

LAKE IN THE HILLS, Ill. (STMW) -- A couple was hurt and three pets died early Monday morning in a northwest suburban house fire.

Fire crews responded to the blaze around 1:33 a.m., which was coming from the lower level of a split-level home in the 300 block of Chippewa Trail in Lake in the Hills, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District assistant chief Peter Van Dorpe said.

A man and woman who were inside had already exited when the fire department arrived, Van Dorpe said.

Both were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin for smoke inhalation, and the man also suffered burns, Van Dorpe said. Their conditions were unknown.

When firefighters entered the home, they found two cats dead in the room of the fire, Van Dorpe said. A dog was also found dead in the adjacent living room, Van Dorpe said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, but foul play is not suspected, Van Dorpe said.

Damage is estimated at $40,000.
