County Official Will Try To Persuade Aldi From Closing In Maywood

(CBS) -- The Village of Maywood says the last grocery store in town has plans to close on Christmas Eve, and elected officials say it's a story of the Grinch That Stole Groceries.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

Aldi says it's closing the store Dec. 24. Elected officials say that will create a "food desert" because Aldi is the last supermarket in town.

Cook County 1st District Commissioner Richard Boykin says he has set up a meeting next week with company officials in hopes of trying to entice Aldi to stay, possibly with incentives.

"What I said to them is if they decide to leave we will make sure that everybody throughout the United States knows that they closed a store – the only grocery store – in a black community," he says.

Aldi says there are other stores in neighboring communities that Maywood residents can access.

Local officials say that is not convenient because they are too far away.
