Construction Worker Gunned Down In South Holland

(CBS) – Sergio Varela was rehabbing homes Friday. On Monday, his family was making funeral arrangements.

The 42-year-old Chicagoan was working at a South Holland construction site when he was killed last week.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports on a family's grief and an investigation that may be expanding.

Around noon Friday, three workers were rehabbing a South Holland home when police say three robbers approached. A struggle at the front door was followed by gunfire.

Jose Varela says his bother Sergio was murdered.

He was shot several times, and then the trio of robbers ran off.

Family members say Varela was working in construction for about 20 years, most recently as an electrician helping to refurbish homes and helping his loved ones.

Neighbor Mayra Serrano says this kind of violent crime is rare.

She says about a week ago, however, two of her ATVs were stolen. She wonders if the robbers who may have targeted worker cash or nearby construction materials or tools struck her home first.

A source familiar with the case says police are looking into whether the robbers are responsible for targeting other construction sites in Dolton and neighboring cities.
