Part Of Michigan Avenue Closed After Construction Debris Falls From Building

CHICAGO (CBS) - Chicago Police say part of Michigan Avenue was shut down Tuesday afternoon after construction debris fell from a building.

Officers shut down Michigan Avenue to pedestrians and vehicles between Randolph and Lake Street.

Initial reports said one man was struck by a cable that fell from the building and was transported to Northwestern in stable condition.

A piece of building equipment detached from their support cables and fell to the ground. Police report a 300 pound davot came loose.

A davot is the arm that holds the cables used when scaffolding. When the cables came loose, cables and parts of the scaffolding fell, breaking six windows as it came down.

Police say seven vehicles were damaged.

Law enforcement is still on the scene working to clear the fallen debris and secure the building. Police were able to get the davot inside of the building.

A witness describes the scene:

Michigan Avenue was closed between Lake and Randoph after part of a scaffolding fell from a nearby building. Nobody was hurt, authorities said. (CBS)

This is a developing story.
