Construction Could Start Next Year For Proposed Live/Work Housing Development For Artists In Pullman
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A proposed live-and-work development for artists is getting closer to the start of construction in the historic Pullman neighborhood.
Aside from one residential building built nearly 50 years ago on 112th and Langley, Pullman Arts president Ann Alspaugh says the last time there was new housing constructed in the Pullman neighborhood was more than 100 years ago.
By 2018, one block north, on the east side of 111th and Langley, there could be 26 apartments in a new building that is in the character of typical Pullman houses plus 12 apartments in two renovated buildings that were constructed in the 1880s.
Alspaugh says the development will be where artists live and work. She says, "The artists will have higher ceiling spaces, lots of natural light" and common amenities such as a gallery, photography space and a conference room.
Just last week, the Chicago Landmarks Commission gave its approval to the plan. There's still more red tape to go through, like re-zoning where the vacant lots stand, before the start of construction, which Alspaugh expects sometime next year.
Alspaugh says there's plenty of interest in the project and that "Pullman continues to be a magnet for the arts."
She says the project could be complete by late 2018.
