"I had given up. I thought a couple of years ago, after we'd tried for about two or three years, I had finally given up and resigned myself that this just wasn't going to happen and that we may end up adopting a child," she tells WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller.

Duckworth said a woman at a public forum told her about a Chicago fertility clinic and not to give up.

Ten years ago, Duckworth was the pilot of a Blackhawk helicopter that was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Iraq.

She lost both legs and her right arm was seriously wounded.

She was the first female double amputee from the Iraq War.

She is 46 years old.

Duckworth is up for re-election in the 8th Congressional District in November. Her challenger is Republican Larry Kaifesh of Carpentersville, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
