Cold Weather Could Put Damper On Valentine's Day Business

(CBS) -- All this cold weather is having an impact on some of the hottest businesses this time of year: florists, and candy shops.

As CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports, not all of your favorite valentine treats are surviving their long cold journeys.

At Floral Express in Bensenville, shipments of flowers from all over the world are pouring in. But not all have survived their long journeys.

"You can have a truck, you open the doors, get a blast of cold at 20 below zero, it doesn't take much," said Maggie Barile, a wholesale florist.

"I've been doing this for 35 years, I have probably had the highest loss this year."

Will replenishments come in time for Valentine's Day? The man in charge of logistics says it will be a challenge.

"As you can tell it's 34 degrees in here, and it actually feels warmer in here than it does outside," he said.

The bigger challenge may be getting people to venture out in the cold to buy.

People are not buying. You see volumes trending down, that has been a noticeable issue."

At The Fudge Pot in Chicago, weather has definitely slowed business.

"People on dates, walking down the street, they're not there. We stand looking out the window, and no one here," said James Dattalo

But Valentine's Day is another story.

"Regardless how cold, there are still obligations you have to fulfill," said Dattalo.

If you're buying flowers for your sweetie, you're going to want to wrap them up in plastic and seal them before you head out, or your Valentine's Day may not go over as planned.
