City Work Crews Finally Free Car Stuck In Block Of Ice

(CBS) -- A frozen car in the Bronzeville neighborhood is finally free.

Andy and Amy Ralston's Honda Accord had been stuck in ice -- all the way up to the floorboards -- on Wabash just north of 26th for more than a month.

Now, the City of Chicago's Water Department has finally been able to chisel it out as crews with shovels and a bulldozer spent several hours on Thursday afternoon digging and steaming out the car.

Slabs of ice about a foot thick and several feet long and wide were chopped away and then hauled off by a bulldozer.

"This has been a terrible winter," Amy Ralston told WBBM as she watched the car being freed. "We're just lucky that we're getting the help that we asked for from the city and we're looking forward to having access to the car again."

The Ralstons had tried for weeks to get the city to do something before crews finally showed up on Thursday.

Neither the Ralstons nor the Chicago Water Department have been able  to confirm how the car got so encased in ice. A leaky water main is the suspected culprit.
