City Reaches Settlement In Cop's Fatal Shooting Of 17-Year-Old

(CBS) -- The Emanuel Administration has tentatively settled another wrongful-death lawsuit over a deadly police-involved shooting.

WBBM's Rob Hart reports.

The mother of 17-year-old Cedric Chatman filed suit against the city in federal court over his shooting death during a traffic stop back in 2013.

Officer Kevin Fry shot and killed Chatman at 75th and Jeffery. The officer said he thought Chatman -- who was an armed robbery suspect -- raised a gun at him; it turned out to be a cellphone box.

Brian Coffman, the attorney for Chatman's mother, Linda, says she "understands the unknown of trial."

"The outcomes are unknown to anyone. This gives her and her family some closure at this point," Coffman says.

The amount of the financial settlement is not being disclosed. The Chicago City Council will have to approve the deal.

City officials declined comment on Friday.
