City Council Vote On New Police Oversight Office Expected This Week
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Emanuel Administration is defending its plans for a new agency to investigate police shootings and alleged officer misconduct. And a full City Council vote could come as soon as tomorrow.
WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports, at a joint City Council hearing, City of Chicago Corporation Counsel Steve Patton outlined an ordinance that would replace the embattled Independent Police Review Authority, IPRA, with COPA, the Civilian Office on Police Accountability.
While at least one alderman, Chris Taliaferro of the 29th Ward, says the vote seems to be rushed, Patton pointed out that there's been months of public hearings. "This process has been delayed on at least four or five occasions," Patton says.
However, Taliaferro says only Mayor Rahm Emanuel's proposals have been considered. "So, to me, it is a rush," he said.
