City Council Committee Recommends Confirmation Of Sharon Fairley As Head Of IPRA

(CBS) -- The City Council's Public Safety Committee is unanimously recommending that Sharon Fairley be confirmed as head of the Independent Police Review Authority. Her last appearance before aldermen wasn't so successful, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

When she testified at the joint Laquan McDonald hearing, former prosecutor Sharon Fairley had trouble answering questions about her new agency or its mission, but she has won over aldermen with private meetings and promises of action.

Fairley will meet with former IPRA investigator Lorenzo Davis who says he was fired for resisting pressure to change findings to justify police shootings. She promises that won't be tolerated.

When asked by Public Safety Chairman Alderman Ariel Reboyras if IPRA can influence current and future Chicago Police policies, Fairley responded, "I would say not only can we but we must and that's part of our statutory mission and it's a part of our mission that I think that we've under-delivered on in the past few years."

Fairley's confirmation now goes to the full council.
