Child's Remains Found In Garfield Park

(CBS) -- Chicago police say a child's foot and other remains were recovered at a West Side park.

The foot was found in the 200 block of McCrae Drive, along the edge of a Garfield Park lagoon, around 4:40 p.m. Saturday.

Neighbors say a person fishing found a foot and called police, who then found another foot and two arms in the shallow water, reports WBBM's Nancy Harty.

Members of the police marine unit combed through sections of the lagoon as a K-9 unit explored the banks of the western section of the park.

Alderman Jason Ervin says they believe the child was between two and four years old.

"I am not aware of any missing children right now," Ervin said. "I would just hope that people in the community or across the city would know that a child is not around from a relative, a family member or a neighbor and make that call to 911," he says.

Ervin calls it "unthinkable" that someone could do this to a child. It was not clear what gender the child was or how long the body was in the water.
