4-year-old killed in house fire in Mundelein ID'd

A 4-year-old child has died after being pulled out of a house fire in the north Chicago suburb of Mundelein early Monday morning.

The fire broke out at 210 Dalton Ave., near Brice Avenue in Mundelein.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and find the child who was unaccounted for. Firefighters later found the child in the basement, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lake County Coroner's Office identified the child as 4-year-old Christopher Alfaro-Rodriguez. 

An autopsy was performed on Monday. Preliminary results indicated that the child died from smoke inhalation. The office said that toxicology testing, including carbon monoxide levels, is pending.

Village officials confirmed the child later died.

"The Village is deeply saddened by the tragic house fire that occurred last evening which resulted in loss of such a young life. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this devastating loss and we extend our deepest condolences during this incredibly difficult time," the village said in a statement on Facebook

Other people inside the house were able to get out safely.

The cause of the fire was under investigation on Monday.
