Chicago's Uptown: A Little Down, But Maybe Not Out

(CBS) -- Chicago's Uptown neighborhood has had its share of problems recently, but it's trying to make a comeback.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports.

At Uptown's Baker Nosh Bakery, owners say business, now in its fifth year is booming.

"We've been very well supported by the neighborhood," co-owner Bill Millholland says.

But just east on Wilson Avenue, storefronts tell a different story. They're empty -- or soon to be. The Starbucks is closing. Magnolia Cafe is gone. And so is a salon.

"What we're seeing right now on Wilson Avenue is a huge transition," Ward 46 Ald. James Cappleman says.

He says perception isn't reality in this case because there are more businesses coming in than leaving.

Many say the Wilson L Stop reconstruction is a business factor.

"But it's taking time, and I think it's cut into the businesses. Also, the violence in the neighborhood," Donna Barney says.

Broadway seems to be the dividing line between stability and uncertainty.

Uptown continues to be one of the most ethnically and socio-economically diverse neighborhoods in Chicago.
