(CBS) -- Congratulations are due to Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.

The New York City native married Chicago personal injury lawyer Kristin Barnette on New Year's Eve Wednesday.

After a civil ceremony, the pair entertained 274 guests with a dinner in which they paid homage to their respective hometowns by serving hot dogs in the New York and Chicago styles (a New York hot dog is topped with brown mustard, onions stewed in tomato sauce and optional sauerkraut).

The couple met at a 2013 holiday party and began dating, according to DNAinfo/Chicago columnist Mark Konkol. McCarthy, 55, credits Barnette for insisting he go to the hospital last year when he was experiencing discomfort in his chest; he'd had a heart attack, and doctors performed an angioplasty.

Barnette, 35, wore a floor-length champagne colored gown by an Australian designer for her wedding.

The power couple is expected to take a honeymoon in the near future.
