Chicago's Polish-American Community Well-Represented For John Paul II's Canonization
(CBS) -- People from all over the world are now in Rome, getting ready to celebrate the rise to sainthood of two popes.
And while the leader of Chicago's Catholic Archdioese may not be there, CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports Chicago still has many people at the canonization ceremony.
Chicago is well and fully represented for Sunday's canonizations. Many have been here before, for John Paul II's funeral, or beatification. There are new faces as well.
Andrew Wypych is Chicago's newest auxiliary bishop, a native of Poland ordained by John Paul II. He is clearly happy to be leading the Chicago delegation.
Did Francis Cardinal George, who was unable to attend, give him any advice?
"He gave me a lot of advice, but no money," Wypych joked.
Speaking with Levine in front of dozens of Polish-Americans from Chicago, he said his mission was to "make Chicago visible and proud."
He celebrated Mass in Polish for Chicagoans whose prayers may have included getting a good spot to view Sunday's proclamation of sainthood for a man they all revere.
The crowds around St. Peter were already building Saturday.
