Chicagoan Wins Emmy For Transgender Series 'Transparent'
(CBS) – The director who took an Emmy Award home over the weekend for the transgender comedy-drama "Transparent" grew up in Chicago.
Jill Soloway's dad inspired the show, CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports.
The 1983 Lane Tech High School graduate is creator – and now Emmy-winning director -- of Amazon series "Transparent."
The family within the show was inspired by Soloway's. In 2011, her father announced his decision to begin living his life as a woman named Carrie.
"I think she was stunned and then angry," Carrie says. "But I think in a few months she started to turn it around, and was happier that I was happy."
Carrie is flattered the show takes its inspiration from her story. Daughter Soloway has helped the transgender movement.
Carrie was at the Emmy's when Soloway gave special poppa. Soloway said in her acceptance speech that there is a "trans-civil rights problem" in this country.
"I'm still very emotional about it," Carrie says.
The retired physician resides in Chicago.
