2 dead, 25 wounded in weekend shootings across the city

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least two people are dead and 24 were injured in shootings in the city over the weekend.

The incidents this weekend included a mass shooting in South Chicago in which seven people were struck.

The shooting happened at 79th Street and Exchange Avenue in broad daylight at 3:40 p.m. Sunday. The scene is a strip mall that includes a liquor store and a Little Caesars pizza, among other businesses. 

Police Supt. David Brown said the seven victims – who were all together in one group – were standing near the Little Caesars when two cars went by, and someone in one of the cars started talking with the group.

Almost immediately afterward, someone fired shots toward the group and wounded seven people.

The victims ranged in age from their late 20s to their 50s, officials said.

Police said a 63-year-old man, a 62-year-old man, a 59-year-old man, and a 36-year-old man were each shot in the leg and were reported in good condition. The oldest man was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, the 62- and 59-year-old men were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the 36-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A 51-year-old man was shot in the hip and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

A 34-year-old man was shot in the chest and a 31-year-old man was shot in the abdomen. Both were taken to the U of C Medical Center in critical condition.

Earlier information indicating that a person died in connection with the shooting was not correct.

The first homicide of the weekend happened at 4:20 a.m. Sunday, when a man and woman, both 19, were approached by an unknown offender in the 800 block of East 83rd Street who entered the location displaying a firearm. 

The offender fired shots in the victims' direction, and both victims suffered a gunshot wound to the face. The victims were transported in serious condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where the woman was pronounced dead. The male victim remains in serious condition. 

At 3:49 p.m. Sunday, a 38-year-old man was shot in the chest in the 6600 block of South Paulina Street in West Englewood. He was pronounced dead at the U of C Medical Center.

In the first shooting of the weekend, A 22-year-old man was shot near a parking lot in the LeClaire Courts neighborhood Friday evening.

Around 5:19 p.m., the victim was near the parking lot in the 4600 block of South Cicero Avenue when he was approached by an unknown vehicle who produced a handgun and fired shots, according to police.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh and a graze wound to the ankle, and self-transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

A 33-year-old man was shot while driving in Hegewisch Friday night.

Police said around 11:36 p.m., the victim was driving in the 13300 block of South Commercial Avenue when he was shot at by an unidentified offender. The victim fled the scene and continued driving until he crashed into a pole a few blocks away.

The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the rear of the head in critical condition.

A 24-year-old woman was shot while riding in a vehicle in the Brighton Park neighborhood Friday night.

Police said around 8:24 p.m. the victim was a passenger in a vehicle in the 3800 block of South Campbell Avenue when a white vehicle approached and began firing shots.

The victim suffered three gunshot wounds to the right leg and was taken to Holy Cross hospital in good condition.

A 19-year-old woman was shot while standing outside in Hanson Park early Saturday morning, according to police.

Around 12:36 a.m., the victim was outside on the 2000 block of North Lorel Avenue when she heard shots fired and felt pain.

The victim suffered one gunshot wound to the shoulder and was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

A 29-year-old man was shot during a verbal altercation early Saturday morning.

Police said around 12:36 a.m., the man suffered two gunshot wounds to the torso during a verbal altercation with a female inside of a residence on the 3700 block of West Wabansia Avenue.

The man was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. 

At about 5:20 p.m. Saturday, two men were sitting in a vehicle in the 4100 block of West 25th Place, when someone shot both of them. 

A 33-year-old man was shot in the arm, and a 20-year-old man was shot in the lower body. Both fled the scene and took themselves to Mount Sinai Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized. 

At 1 a.m. Sunday, a man was shot and wounded on the outbound Eisenhower Expressway near California Avenue. Illinois State Police said the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday:

·       At 10:40 p.m. Saturday, A man, 22 was walking on the sidewalk on the 5100 block of North California Avenue when he observed a black Chevy approach, and someone began firing shots. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg and groin area and was taken by a family member to the hospital in good condition.

·        At 3:38 a.m. Sunday, A man, 35, was walking on the sidewalk on the 4000 block of West Belmont Avenue when he heard people yelling and then heard shots and felt pain. The victim had suffered one gunshot wound to the left shoulder and was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital in good condition. 

·        At 1:56 a.m. Sunday, A woman, 38, was a passenger in a vehicle 700 block of South Kedzie Avenue when she observed several men on the sidewalk, heard shots, and felt immediate pain. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the lower back and waved down a police squad car that was in the area. The victim was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

·       At 3:30 a.m. Sunday, a man, 53, was in driving in his vehicle in the 1900 block of West Hastings Street when he was approached by a dark pickup and a Hispanic man exited and began firing shots at the victim. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and self-transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

·       At 5:52 a.m. Sunday, a man was traveling east in his car in the 3100 block of South Keeler Avenue in Little Village when someone in a gray sport-utility vehicle fired shots. The vehicles stopped in a the 3100 block of South Hamlin Avenue and an exchange of gunfire ensued. The victim was not injured, but one of the two attackers suffered a graze wound to the back and was stabilized at Mount Sinai Hospital. Responding officers arrested two suspects and a gun was recovered.

·       At 11:07 a.m. Sunday, a 50-year-old man was standing outside in the 1500 block of West 79th Street in Auburn Gresham when someone came up and shot him. The victim was shot in his right elbow and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was stabilized.

·       At 2 p.m. Sunday, a 25-year-old man was near the sidewalk in the 6800 block of South Throop Street in Englewood when he was approached by a vehicle. Someone got out of the vehicle, took out a gun, and shot the man in the back and arm. He was taken to the U of C Medical Center in serious condition.

·       At 5:08 p.m. Sunday, a 29-year-old man was shot in the street in the 700 block of North Christiana Avenue in Humboldt Park. The victim was struck in the neck and shoulder and first self-transported to Humboldt Park Health, and was then transferred to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. He was in critical condition.

·      At 9 p.m. Sunday, a woman was approached by two men in the 1700 block of South Wentworth Avenue in the area of Ping Tom Memorial Park. One of the men took out a gun and shot her in the right side of the neck. She was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in critical condition.
