Chicago weekend shootings: 5 dead, 24 wounded

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least one person is dead, and nine others were hurt in shootings across Chicago as of Saturday. The ages of the victims range from 19 to 43.

In the first shooting of the weekend, a 19-year-old woman was shot while walking on the sidewalk around 10:55 p.m., in the 7200 block of South Halsted Street in Englewood Friday evening.

She was struck in the forearm and taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.

About an hour later around 11:40 p.m., five people were shot in the 1600 block of West Howard Street in Rogers Park.

Police said the victims were on the sidewalk when two vehicles approached, and an argument ensued.

Unknown suspects from both vehicles opened fire - striking the victims.

Someone from the crowd exchanged gunfire but left the scene before officers arrived, according to police.

Two men, 37 and 29, were taken to St. Francis Hospital in good condition. Two women, 26 and 29, were also struck and taken to St. Francis in good condition.

The fifth victim, a 36-year-old man, was grazed in the head by a bullet and refused medical treatment at the scene.

No arrests were made.

A 35-year-old man was shot in the foot just blocks away, in the 1900 block of West Howard Street around 1:19 a.m. Saturday.  

Police say the victim was standing on the sidewalk when he heard shots and immediately felt pain. The victim self-transported to St Francis Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the left foot.

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:

  • At 4 a.m. Saturday, in the 9600 block of South Perry Avenue, a 22-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk when shots were fired on the block by an unknown suspect. The victim was shot in the back of the head and was pronounced dead on the scene.
  • At 10:48 a.m. Saturday, in the 8300 block of South Exchange Avenue, a 43-year-old man was on the sidewalk when an unknown black vehicle approached and occupants from inside began shooting at the victim. The victim was shot in the face and left leg and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. 
  • At 11:40 a.m. Saturday, in the 3900 block of South Lake Shore Drive, a 43-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The victim was transported to U of C in critical condition. Circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by Area One detectives.
  • At 2:23 p.m. Saturday in the 5500 block of West Race Avenue, a 31-year-old man was in an alley when an unknown vehicle pulled up and someone inside started shooting. The victim was struck in the left leg and trasnported to West Suburban Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 5:53 p.m. Saturday in the 9000 block of South Cottage Grove, a 32-year-old man was on the sidewalk when he was shot in the leg by an unknown person. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. 
  • At 6:34 p.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of West Adams, a 24-year-old man was on the street when he was shot in the back by an unknown person. He was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. 
  • At 9:45 p.m. Saturday, in the 1600 block of North Parkside Avenue, police responded to a person shot and found a 41-year-old man, identified as Anthony Jackson by the Medical Examiner's Office, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and back. The victim was unable to communicate and was transported to Loyola Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
  • At 9:44 Saturday, in the 10900 block of South Union Avenue, police responded to shots fired and found a 30-year-old man with two gunshot wounds to the thigh and one gunshot wound to the hand. The victim was outside standing near two individuals who were having an argument. One of the individuals involved drew a firearm and began shooting. The victim was transported to Advocate Christ Hospital in fair condition.
  • At 8:52 p.m. Saturday, in the 10-100 block of West Cermak Road, a 28-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was unable to provide details of the incident and was taken to Northwestern Hospital where he later died.
  • At 2:14 a.m. Sunday, in the 200 block of East Garfield Boulevard, police found two men who were struck by gunfire. A 32-year-old man was shot multiple times in the body and was transported to U of C where he was pronounced dead. A 42-year-old woman was shot in the leg and also taken to U of C in fair condition.   
  • At 3:55 Sunday, in an unknown location, a man, 22, was shot in his right thigh and self-transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. Circumstances surrounding this incident are currently under investigation by Area Three Detectives.
  • At 5 a.m. Sunday, in the 7600 block of South Ellis Avenue, a man, 42, was outside at the above location when he heard shots and then felt pain. He was taken to Stroger with a gunshot wound to his left leg in good condition.
  • At 9:30 a.m. Sunday, in an unknown location, a 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand and self-transported to Rush Hospital in good condition. Circumstances surrounding this incident are currently under investigation by Area Three Detectives. Police say the victim was very uncooperative with responding officers about the incident and refused to provide any information. 
  • At 3 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of South Homan, a 19-year-old man was shot multiple times while walkding down the street. A vehicle pulled up and someone inside started shooting. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead. 
  • At 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of East 67th Street, a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were shot while outside. An unknown vehicle drove by and someone inside shot at the victims. The 27-year-old was struck in the torso and arm and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. The 24-year-old vicitm was transported to Jackson Park Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 8 p.m. Sunday in the 7400 block of South Kingston, a 26-year-old man was shot in the face during a narcotics related incident. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
