Chicago weekend shootings: 8 dead, 27 wounded

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least eight people are dead and 27 others are wounded in weekend shootings across the city. The ages of the victims range from 14 to 65.

In the first shooting of the weekend, a 22-year-old man was in an alley in the 5500 block of West Race Avenue, when someone in an SUV started shooting at him.

The man was shot in the leg, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

Around a half hour later, a 22-year-old man was shot while inside a car, in the 100 block of East 45th Street in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

Police say the victim was seated in the car around 6:05 p.m., when an unknown suspect shot him in the leg.

The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Later in the evening, three other shootings followed – all occurring within one hour.

The first shooting of the hour happened around 8:08 p.m., in the 5400 block of West Madison Street in the South Austin neighborhood.

According to police, an unknown man wearing all black entered a business and fired shots into the crowd.

A 65-year-old man was shot in the left leg and was taken by Chicago Fire Department to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition.

A second man of unknown age was shot twice in the stomach and was transported in critical condition to Loyola Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Minutes later, a 32-year-old man was standing in an alley, in the 10800 block of South Avenue East in the city's East Side neighborhood around 8:23 p.m., when he heard shots and felt pain. 

The victim was transported to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition with gunshot wounds to the left and right foot. 

Over in West Garfield Park around 8:42 p.m., a 29-year-old man was outside drying his vehicle, in the 3900 block of West Washington Boulevard, when he heard shots and felt pain.

The victim was shot in the left foot and self-transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating after a person was shot by a Chicago police officer, in the in the 3800 block of West Flournoy Street in the Lawndale neighborhood Saturday morning. 

According to authorities, no officers were hurt. The victim, an unaged male, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and later died. 

The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for the next 30 days while COPA investigates. 

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday: 

·        At 9:40 p.m. Friday, in the 4400 block of West Grand Avenue, a man, 23, was a passenger in a vehicle when shots were fired in the area and he was struck. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital for medical attention by the driver of the vehicle. The victim was shot in the back of the head and is in critical condition. The driver was very uncooperative and refused to answer any questions about the shooting. 

·        At 9:47 p.m. Friday, in the 10200 block of South Van Vlissingen Road, a 25-year-old man was standing outside of a residence when someone unknown fired shots in his direction. The victim was shot four times in the left arm, leg, abdomen, and torso and was transported by Chicago fire to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.

·        At 8:49 p.m. Friday, in the 3100 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, a 14-year-old boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the left thigh. There are no specifics on the incident.

·        At 11:54 p.m. Friday, in the 3000 block of West Lexington Street, a group was gathered outside of a residence when two unknown suspects fired multiple shots from the alley striking two victims. A 17-year-old girl was shot in the left buttocks and self-transported to Mt Sinai in good condition. A 22-year-old man was shot twice in the left thigh and self-transported to Mt Sinai in good condition.

·        At 11:58 p.m. Friday, in the 3700 block of South Wabash Avenue, two boys victims were walking on the street when a group of five or six unknown male suspects approached and fired multiple shots. A 15-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the left foot and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen and was taken to U of C hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

·        At 11:39 p.m. Friday, in the 5000 block of West Jackson Boulevard, a 42-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when two men approached and demanded his property. During a struggle, the victim was shot by one of the suspects. The victim was transported to Mt. Sinai in fair condition with gunshot wounds to the chest and right leg. 

·        At 2:52 a.m. Saturday, in the 2500 block of West Adams Street, a 21-year-old man was discovered on the street unresponsive. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was pronounced dead on the scene. 

·        At 3:55 a.m. Saturday, in the 500 block of North Lamon Avenue, two men were walking on the sidewalk when two other men approached on foot and fired shots. A 35-year-old man was transported to Mt. Sinai in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the body. A 29-year-old man walked into West Suburban Hospital and is listed in good condition with a graze wound to the head. 

·        At 6:49 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of North Pine, a 28-year-old man was inside a vehicle when he was shot in the leg. The victim was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital and initially reported in good condition. 

·        At 9:19 p.m. Saturday in the 13000 block of South Champlain, a 20-year-old man was standing in the sidewalk when he was shot in the chest and right leg. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

·        At 9:45 p.m. Saturday in the 12000 block of South Prairie, a 48-year-old woman was getting into her vehicle when she was shot in the leg. She was transported to Roseland Hospital in fair condition. 

·        At 9:05 p.m. Saturday, in the 0-100 block of East Washington Street, two teens were shot by an unknown person while standing in a crowd of people in the Loop.  A 16-year-old boy was transported by the CFD to Northwestern Hospital in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the right arm.  A 17-year-old boy was also transported to Northwestern by the CFD in fair condition with a  gunshot wound to the left leg. 

·        At 10:33 p.m. Saturday, in the 3000 block of West 77th Place, Two men, 26 and 28, were sitting in a parked vehicle when an occupant in a black SUV fired shots. Both were shot in the legs and were taken by CFD to Advocate Christ in critical condition. 

·        At 11:18 p.m. Saturday, in the 800 block of West 51st Street, a man was standing on the sidewalk when an occupant in a black sedan fired shots. The victim was shot in the chest and taken by the CFD to U of C where he was pronounced dead.

·        At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, in the 7900 block of South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, a 26-year-old man was in a vehicle when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in fair condition with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and left arm.

·        At 1:53 a.m. Sunday, a 55-year-old man walked into a residence, in the 8330 block of South Luella Avenue, and fired shots - fatally striking a man in the head. The gunman then chased a 26-year-old woman to the 8200 block of S. Paxton where she was struck in the head with a blunt object. The woman was pronounced on scene and the gunman was placed into custody by responding officers. There were no other injuries. Police the incident appears to be domestic-related.

·        At 4:09 a.m. Sunday, in the 3200 block of West Roosevelt Road, a 26-year-old man was taken to Mt. Sinai in serious condition with multiple gunshot wounds to the body, and a 36-year-old was also taken to Mt. Sinai with gunshot wounds to the buttocks in good condition. The victims would not cooperate and disclose any details. 

·        At 4:35 a.m. Sunday, in the 800 block of West 54th Place, a man, 31, was outside when an unknown suspect inside a grey-in-color sedan began firing shots in his direction. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body. He was transported to U of C in critical condition.

·        At 3:50 a.m. Sunday, in the 9100 block of South Stoney Island Avenue, a 24-year-old man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his left thigh at the above location. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

·       At 12 p.m. Sunday, in the 5400 block of South Indiana Avenue, a 30-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to his chest at the above location. He was transported to University of Chicago in critical condition. 

·       At 3 p.m. Sunday, in the 1500 block of South Kildare, a 31-year-old man was in front of a home, when a gray vehicle drove past, and someone inside shot him in the abdomen. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

·       At 4:15 p.m. Sunday, in the 3800 block of West Arthington, a 20-year-old man was walking when four people walked up and started shooting. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The shooters ran into a building in the 900 block of South Springfield, prompting a SWAT team response, but no one was taken into custody.

·       At 12:10 a.m. Monday, a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were sitting in a car, when two gunmen tried to carjack them. The victims drove off, and the carjackers shot them, causing them to crash. The man was shot several times, and was pronounced dead. The woman was in good condition at University of Chicago Medical Center, with a gunshot wound to the foot.
