Chicago Weather: Winter Storm Watch Starts Friday

CHICAGO (CBS)-- The National Weather Service says starting Friday night, a winter storm watch will be in effect through late Saturday night.

There will be a mix of freezing rain and sleet likely Friday night and Saturday, then changing to a period of heavy snow late Saturday afternoon and night.

There could be up to more than six inches of snow that could come through Saturday afternoon and evening. It's expected to take place in north central and parts of northeastern Illinois.

The NWS added that power outages are possible and tree damage "are possible" as a result of the icy and windy conditions coming through.

It's going to be a windy day in the Chicago area on Thursday with wind gusts 20 to 40 miles-per-hour.

According to CBS 2 meteorologist Megan Glaros, a wind advisory will take effect in southern counties at 10 a.m. and go through 6 p.m.

Rain showers are possible after noon Thursday and heavy rain could continue into Friday. By Saturday, the rain could turn into a wintry mix.

Temperatures are expected to start to drop on Saturday, but rise to the 40s by Monday.
