Chicago Weather: Snowstorm Leads To Major Delays For Arriving Flights At O'Hare, Midway
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Some flights at O'Hare and Midway international airports were delayed by over an hour Tuesday evening as a snowstorm pounded the Chicago area.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported that earlier Tuesday evening, a Traffic Management Program was in effect at O'Hare Tuesday evening due to snow and ice.
This caused some arriving flights to be delayed by an average of 1 hour and 18 minutes. The program was no longer in effect by 9:15 p.m.
The Chicago Department of Aviation reported the average delay for arriving flights at O'Hare by 9:15 p.m. Tuesday evening was 17 minutes.
At Midway, arriving flights there were delayed by fewer than 15 minutes by 9:15 p.m., down from an average of 65 minutes.
The Department of Aviation also reported that at Midway, only one runway was operational Tuesday night – as often happens during inclement weather as runways are being groomed or salted.
Southwest Airlines – the main airline serving Midway – preemptively canceled a number of flights, so the delays resulting from the closed runway were minimal, the department said.

The Chicago area was hit with a fast-moving snowstorm early Tuesday evening. A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for the city with up to 6 inches expected, while a Winter Storm Warning was issued to the north and northwest with 6 to 10 inches expected.
