Chicago Weather: Severe Storms Move Through Chicago Area Sunday Afternoon

CHICAGO (CBS)--Parts of Cook County were under a severe thunderstorm warning Sunday afternoon, as a line of storms carrying 60 MPH wind gusts sweeps the area.

According to the National Weather Service areas surrounding Aurora got around 1.10 inches of rain as of Sunday evening. Heavy rainfall caused damage on the North Side, including downed trees on cars and blocked streets.

A flood warning was issued for areas surrounding the Illinois River including La Salle just before 8 p.m.

The warning has since expired, but storms are continuing to move through Northern Illinois.

In Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, the wind had knocked down power lines, trees and a light pole. At least three vehicles had been damaged by downed trees, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms have been popping up in an area stretching from Chicago to Ottawa, according to CBS 2 meteorologist Robb Ellis.

The National Weather Service said strong thunderstorms moving at 50 MPH were spotted over Oak Forest and Midlothian around 2 p.m.

A Marine Warning was also in effect Sunday afternoon for parts of Lake Michigan.
