Chicago Weather: Rain, Thunderstorms Returning; Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Issued For Parts Of Area

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Torrential downpours are expected in the Chicago area late Monday.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Monday afternoon for southeast Kendall and northwest Will counties early in the afternoon.

A new severe thunderstorm warning was later issued for east central Cook County and northern Lake County, Indiana.

Over a period of three hours, a total of 2.5 inches of rain fell in parts of Ottawa Monday afternoon, 1.5 inch between Aurora and Joliet, and 1 inch at the lakefront north of Gary.

That storm system had moved out over the lake by 6 p.m. But some slow-moving cells were advancing through the Aurora and Joliet areas Monday afternoon, and others still were seen in the Streator area.

A flash flood watch in also effect through Tuesday for torrential downpours. Rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible.

The storm threat through sunset. Storm cells will move slowly, increasing chances for flooded roadways. It is worth keeping an eye on for the evening rush.

All storms are moving southwest to northeast.

Scattered showers will continue overnight. It will be muggy with a low of 70.

On Tuesday, look for more heavy downpours and thunderstorms at times with a high of 83.

On Wednesday, there will be showers and thunderstorms yet again with a high of 82.
