Chicago Weather Alert: Winter Storm Warning Now In Effect With 6+ Inches Of Snow On The Way

CHICAGO (CBS)-- A WINTER STORM WARNING began Tuesday evening for much of the area – including the city of Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

The warning took effect at 8 p.m. and continue through Wednesday at 6 p.m. The warning takes effect in Cook, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, Will, LaSalle, and Kankakee counties and all of the Northwest Indiana counties.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect for the same timeframe for northern Cook County and Lake, DuPage, Kane, and DeKalb counties.

Snow was increasing late Tuesday night and was set to become widespread over the advisory and warning area overnight. Heavy areas of snow will be likely, especially for areas south and southeast of downtown Chicago.

Travel will become very difficult to impossible overnight and for the Wednesday morning commute, especially for areas under a Winter Storm Warning. Snow chances continue through the day on Wednesday and linger into Wednesday evening.

Snowfall amounts will range from a dusting in far northern counties to over a foot in some locations to the south, including in Kankakee County and parts of Northwest Indiana.

In Cook County, snowfall amounts could range from 2 inches in Schaumburg in northern Cook County, to over a foot in Chicago Heights in southern Cook County.

Snow chances will linger into Thursday, especially for areas along the lake. Highs will remain cold in the 20s for late this week into the weekend.
