Chicago Students Planning Peace March As Part Of Anti-Violence Campaign

(CBS) -- As Chicago moves into summer, or what some refer to as "the killing season" some students are working to change that.

Students at Perspectives Charter School are launching an anti-violence campaign entitled, "I Am For Peace" and are asking area churches in the roughest parts of the city to help them in the fight.

Perspectives board member Cheryl Jackson, the former head of the Chicago Urban League, is supervising the group which is producing a documentary and will hold a peace march.

"We're part of the problem and hearing young people like Razia and students at Perspectives Charter School to take a stand in such mass numbers, maybe that will wake us up and realize this battle and this war zone is no different than the war zone in Afghanistan," said Jackson.

Students are raising money for the documentary on Kickstarter. They are looking to raise $35,000.

The peace march will be held June 5.
