2nd crime scene found in building where Chicago police shot knife-wielding man

Two separate shootings involving Chicago police were reported on the South Side early Monday morning just minutes apart early Monday.

There were also two separate crime scenes at the assisted care facility where one of the police shootings happened.

Around 3:15 a.m., the Civilian Office of Police Accountability responded to a shooting involving an off-duty Chicago police officer at Grand Regency of Jackson Park Supportive Living, an assisted living community at 1448 E. 75th St. in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.

The Chicago Police Department said just before 3 a.m., officers responded to a call for a person with a butcher knife threatening residents. Police said officers confronted the armed man and used Tasers to subdue him.

Police said when the Tasers failed and he continued to approach the officers with a knife in hand, and officers then opened fire, striking him.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and police said a knife was recovered.

A few hours later, around 6:30 a.m. police said a 58-year-old man was found unresponsive inside a unit in the assisted living facility. Police said the man had cuts on his arm and neck, and was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Police will not confirm if the two crime scenes are connected.

Police also have not yet released further information about the two men, and would not say if they knew each other or were connected in any way.

The facility is advertised online as a program for adults between the ages of 22 and 64 with physical disabilities who need help maintaining their independence.

One neighbor who has lived in the assisted living facility for two years now said she hears people quarreling there all the time — and it is starting to be a scary place to live.

"I don't feel safe," said Maxine Johnson. "I feel scared all the time."

CBS News Chicago reached out to the assisted living facility, which said they are fully cooperating with police in their investigation and are committed to supporting their residents and staff during this difficult time.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties as COPA investigates.
