Police shoot at suspect who fled after hitting squad car in South Chicago community, CPD says

Three people were in custody Thursday afternoon after a Chicago police officer fired at a suspect who ran from a stolen car that had hit a squad car, the CPD said.

Police said at 11:32 a.m., they were investigating stolen vehicles in the area of the 8100 block of South Merrill Avenue. When officers came up to one stolen car, the driver tried to flee and hit a Chicago police squad car, police said.

One of the people in the car got out and fled on foot with a gun, at which point one Chicago police fired their gun, police said.

No one was struck.

Two juveniles and an adult were taken into custody, and two guns and two stolen cars were recovered, police said.

One of the juvenile suspects was taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital with an abrasion to his hand, police said. One officer was also taken to an area hospital for minor injuries, and another for observation, police said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was investigating. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact COPA at 312-746-3609, or visit the COPA website.

The Investigative Response team was also dispatched. Further information was not immediately released.
