Chicago Police Officers Pay Tribute To Fallen Colleagues During Annual St. Jude Memorial March

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Thousands of Chicago police officers gathered along the lakefront Sunday morning to pay tribute to their fallen colleagues in the 84th annual St. Jude Memorial March.

They marched in the street in front the Gold Star Families Memorial in the chill and light rain.

Eddie Johnson said of his first march as police superintendent that it warms his heart to see so many cops coming out to support their fellow officers.

Chicago did not lose any officers this year, he says.

The event comes amid continued heightened tensions over shootings of unarmed African-Americans and efforts to reform the department.

Harold Brown, president of the Chicago Police Officers Association, says
there are bad apples in every group and that too often today parents tell their children not to trust police.

The event honors the nearly 600 officers killed in the line of duty.

Governor Bruce Rauner, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez and U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon all attended the march.
