Chicago Cops Honored For Saving Fellow Officers
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Seven police officers were honored Wednesday by the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, for saving the lives of two fellow cops by using automated external defibrillators and CPR.
Officer Andrew Jones was at the ceremony honoring officers Danielle Mulligan, Jordan Parks, and Phillip Renault – the three officers who rushed to his side after he collapsed while working in the Harrison District lockup several weeks ago.
"The officers just jumped into action, they went and got the defibrillator, they applied it to me, and I'm here today because of them," he said.
Jones said he normally works on the street, on his own, not inside, and probably would have died had it happened any other day.
"I wouldn't have made it," he said.
Mulligan used an AED on Jones, and she and the other two officers took turns doing chest compressions until Jones was breathing again.
"Couldn't have a better end result. So seeing the officer standing here today … the awards are great, but seeing him here is far better than any award," Renault said.
Also honored for saving an officer's life at Chicago Public Safety Headquarters last month were Sgt. Charmane Kielbasa; and Officers Norma Colon, Jose Rocha, Beata Staszewski.
