Chicago Police Officer Wounded In Shootout With Carjacking Suspect
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer was grazed by a bullet in a shootout with a carjacking suspect in the Rosemoor neighborhood late Tuesday.
Police said officers were investigating reports of a carjacking shortly after 10 p.m., and spotted a vehicle suspected to be the one they were seeking in the 600 block of East 100th Place.
Instead of pulling over, the driver leaned out the window and began shooting at officers, police said.
At least one bullet pierced the windshield of the police SUV, and grazed an officer's face.
Other officers nearby responded to the call for help, and fired back at the suspect.
"The offender fired multiple shots at that squad car. Those officers were able to return fire and eventually took the offender into custody," Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said. "It just goes to show you again our people are out here, with all these weapons, and they're not afraid to use them."
A 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
The wounded officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment, but was not admitted.
"These officers knew that was a vehicle taken in a carjacking, and they went to the vehicle, as opposed to away from it. So the police officers, the men and women of the Chicago Police Department are doing what they're supposed to do, but this just illustrates how dangerous it is," Johnson said.
Charges against the suspect were pending Wednesday morning.
