Chicago Police Officer Opens Fire During Foot Chase In University Village

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A male has been taken into custody after he allegedly pointed a gun at Chicago Police officers during a foot chase Sunday night, prompting one officer to open fire in the University Village neighborhood on the Near West Side.

About 11:50 p.m., officers approached a group of "suspicious males" to conduct a field interview in the 1300 block of West 13th Street, when they saw that one of the males was holding his waistband, according to Chicago Police.

The officers attempted to speak to him, but the male ran away and the officers gave chase, police said.

During the pursuit, the male pointed a gun at the officers, prompting one officer to discharge his weapon, police said. No one was struck.

The male, whose age was not known, was eventually apprehended and a weapon was recovered, police said. Charges were pending early Monday.
