Chicago Police Officer Involved In Koschman Case Quits
CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago police lieutenant who the department was trying to fire for his role in the 2004 homicide investigation involving the nephew of then-Mayor Richard Daley has quit.
Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says Lieutenant Denis Walsh resigned last week just days after the department announced that Interim Superintendent John Escalante is recommending to the Chicago Police Board that Walsh be fired.
The department has said Walsh and two officers whom Escalante wants suspended "did not properly follow department policies" when they investigated the death of David Koschman. Koschman died after a fight with Daley's nephew, Richard Vanecko, outside a Chicago bar.
Articles by the Chicago Sun-Times raised questions about whether police and prosecutors mishandled the case and in 2014 Vanecko pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.
