Chicago Missionary Murdered In Haiti
(CBS) -- A Chicago missionary has been murdered, found dead in the very country he was trying to help.
George Knoop, 77, was stabbed to death Tuesday in his home in Haiti.
He moved to Port-au-Prince after the 2010 earthquake to help. Now, his family and friends wonder if someone he was helping took his life.
"He leaves a wonderful legacy of making a difference," says Pastor Larry McCarthy Jr.
For more than three years, Knoop helped the people of Haiti. Two days a week he worked for Missionary Flights International. The rest of the time, he spent building houses and ministering to anyone who would listen -- something he was very proud of.
"As time goes on, I'm watching. I'm listening. I'm learning, and I'm looking for other places where God is going to plug me in there," the victim said in a promotional video from The Moody Church.
Knoop planned to minister for the rest of his life in Haiti, but Tuesday, his life came to a violent end. Tuesday afternoon, he was stabbed several times, McCarthy says.
He managed to call for help and told people he recognized his attacker, but didn't give a name or a motive.
Those who know him can't understand why anyone would hurt him.
There have been no arrest in Knoop's murder. His family says he will be cremated in Haiti and then his remains will be returned to the U.S.
The Moody Church is working with Knoop's family to plan a memorial.
