Chicago Man, Glenview Woman Die After Truck Wheel Crashes Into Their Car In Michigan

(CBS) – Two motorists from the Chicago area have died in Michigan after a wheel from an oncoming tanker truck crossed the median and collided with their vehicle over the weekend, authorities said.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 94 in Portage, Mich. A Honda Accord was travelling eastbound when a "tandem wheel/tire assembly" flew off the oncoming tanker truck, bounced into opposite traffic and struck the Accord, Portage authorities said in a news release.

A backseat passenger, 67-year-old Rebecca Avery of Glenview, died at the scene. The driver, Michael Ditewig of Chicago, 34, was pronounced dead at a Kalamazoo hospital on Sunday.

A third person in the vehicle was treated for a non-life-threatening injury, authorities said.
