Chicago-Made Oreos Make For Presidential Campaign Fodder

(CBS) -- The most talked about presidential candidate, Donald Trump, is on the most talked about late show launch Tuesday night, and at the center of it, a Chicago icon - the Oreo cookie.

CBS 2's Brad Edwards is on the double stuffed debate.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he would never eat Oreos again because of the Chicago cookie maker's moneymaking move south.

"I'm not surprised that Donald Trump is willing to stand up to Big Cookie," Stephen Colbert said on his Late Show debut. "I mean after all, he's the only candidate brave enough to deport the Keebler Elves."

Oreo's parent company plans to move production to Mexico\; cutting its Chicago workforce 50 percent, from 1,200 to 600 employees at its plant at 73rd and Kedzie.

Just outside the plant's footprint, Ramiro says he no longer sells Oreos after the announcement. Chicago-made pasta is now on the shelf where Oreos used to be.

In an area with a third Latino, Ramiro is Mexican-American. He says Trump, "needs to learn how to stay quiet sometimes.

Oreo's parent company, Mondelez International said "the Chicago bakery will continue to be an important part of their manufacturing and Oreos continues to be made in the U.S."
