(CBS) -- Fences came down Saturday on a section of the lakefront trail on Chicago's North Side, as the city and the Park District seek to bring peace between walkers, runners and cyclists.

The new section opened along the trail at Ardmore Street.

Trisha Palma, of the Chicago-Area Runner's Association, is pleased, especially with the crushed limestone running path alongside the asphalt trail.

"It'll be fantastic when this is all improved," she said.

Mayor Emanuel noted there's room for runners, walkers and cyclists.

"It's good to have that side path that's for running, and you don't have to hear screaming, 'on your left' constantly," he said.

By the end of July, seven miles will be done with divided north and south paths. Then, work begins between 31st and 51st Streets.

Ron Burke, with the Active Transportation Alliance said on a summer day there are probably 100,000 people on the trails. That's about the same number of cars on Lake Shore Drive on a given day.
