Chicago Kicks Off Holiday Season With Annual Tree-Lighting
(CBS) -- Just in time for the arrival of the season's first snowflakes, Chicago's official Christmas tree was lit Friday.
The 10,500-pound, 69-foot-high tree, was brought to Millennium Park on a flatbed truck. It was donated by the Scholla family from Wauconda.
Bill Scholla was honored for his tree to be chosen for the 103rd Annual Chicago Christmas tree lighting. He says he planted it nearly 50 years ago when it was 2 feet tall.
"All I did to it is trim the bottom branches underneath it. The good lord shaped it and I never touched it," he said.
The tree-lighting ceremony is considered a kickoff to the holiday season in Chicago.
