Chicago Weather Alert: Winter Weather Advisory In Effect; 1 to 4 Inches Of Snow Possible

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in the Chicago area Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday.

More widespread snow starts to develop by the afternoon, after 2 p.m. The snow will start out in areas south of the city. First Alert Weather models show the snowfall will likely impact evening commuters. The snowfall is expected to be the most intense between 8 p.m. and midnight.

Projected snow totals will be in the 1 to 4 inches range and higher totals near the lake. Most of the area will get 2 or 3 inches, with some far western suburbs getting about an inch.

Snow tapers off early Friday. There will be some lingering impacts by the Friday morning commute. Then, the sun returns for the weekend with highs above freezing.  In fact, a much quieter weather pattern is forecast though the middle of next week.
