Delivery driver shot, killed on Chicago's South Side

CHICAGO (CBS)--  A delivery driver was killed in a shooting and crash Monday night in Englewood.

Chicago police said just after 6:30 p.m., the 53-year-old man was dropping off food, near 57th and Sangamon, when someone shot him in the chest.

Police said the delivery driver crashed into a parked car.

He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died.

No one is in custody.

Neighbors told CBS 2 they witnessed the aftermath of the attack.

"He was just sitting here, and his body was just sitting there slumped over like he was dead," said one witness, who didn't want to be identified.

The person added, "He was slumped over. I know he's gone. I know he wasn't moving. His foot was still in the gas, like somebody had to go over there and turn the car off. Wheels were still turning."

Neighbors said another person came to help and turned off his car.

Another resident said she came home in the middle of the search for suspects to find her car was likely totaled.

The shooting death came just as the Chicago Gig Alliance announced plans to hold a candlelight vigil outside of City Hall on Thursday. The organization wants delivery and rideshare apps to start verifying the identity of customers like they do for drivers.

Alliance representatives said they believe Monday's shooting was the eighth attack against an app-based driver in Chicago this month alone.
